The Green Shopper Program
Municipal Solid Waste Composition
In 1988, Canadians consumed 6.2 million tonnes of packaging, of which 80.7% was sent to landfills or for incineration. Only 12.8% of all packaging was recycled and only 6.5% was reused*.
Packaging represents approximately 30% by weight of our municipal waste stream and 50% by volume.
In response to the growing concerns about waste and packaging, The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) set up the National Packaging Task Force. The CCME is comprised of the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Environment.
