Action Projects to Improve the
Environment
Beautification Projects
When you undertake a practical beautification project you will raise
your group's profile, improve its public image, secure publicity for events, attract new
members and enjoy yourselves.
Find out what needs doing in your community. Tackle it and beautify
the environment!
Here are some suggestions:
- Organize a river, canal, park, trail or highway
clean up.

- For
information about ordering special PITCH-IN garbage bags

- "Adopt a Lake". Encourage community groups and schools to clean up the garbage and beautify
the areas around the lake
- "Adopt" a local building that needs improvement with the permission of the owner (community hall or
?). Put up signs providing details of the work to be undertaken and inviting public
participation.
- "Adopt a Block or Street". Get residents in your community to work together to look after public and
private lands on "their" block. Work with your local government and select the
cleanest/most improved blocks annually!
- Initiate a
village/town
centre/town square improvement project to clear up
accumulated litter, repair, paint, refurbish and upgrade a specific local area. Get
permission where required. Photograph the site before and after.
- "Adopt" a vacant lot or neglected piece of land and turn it into a nature park or play area, with
the owner's permission
- Identify an improvement project: Repair broken steps; Plant a flower bed and maintain it; Clear accumulated
litter; Remove graffiti; Fix a rock wall; Paint a fence; Clean a monument; Clean a
cemetery; Install or refurbish litter containers.
- For information about PITCH-IN decals for
litter containers
- Plant trees
where
needed. Local businesses or individuals could sponsor a tree. You can get your
"fund" started at any time and plant when the time is "just right"!
One tree can absorb as much as 21kg. of carbon dioxide per year.
- Assist local youths
with
their projects. Perhaps they need sponsorship, recognition, donation of tools and
materials or advice in planning a project.
