Competitions

Competitions can be fun and they involve people. Children, in particular, love to enter, especially if they know that their results will be displayed.

Try and obtain prizes for your competition from local businesses and publicize the results in your local media. Possible sponsors for each of the following contests are indicated in brackets.

Here are some ideas for contests

  • Hold a Photo Competition for different age groups (Your Newspaper, local Photo Store or Studio)
  • Sponsor a Cleanest School Competition (Your School Board)
  • Motivate your newspaper(s) to ask their readers to choose eyesores with suggestions on how they can be improved. Ask the paper to photograph the eyesore and publish a different one every week leading up to PITCH-IN WEEK (May). Select a winning idea and present it to your Council (Your Council).
  • Run an Environment Quiz on your radio station (Your Radio Station, local Businesses) during PITCH-IN WEEK
  • Hold a "Cleanest Business Premises" competition. (Your Chamber of Commerce or a Service Club)
  • Organize an Essay Competition (A major Company in your community, a Service Club)
  • Organize a Poster Contest (Your TV Station, newspaper, Town Council, Shopping Centre, Business, Service Club)
  • Organize an "Open Garden" program (similar to an "Open House") to let members of the public see private gardens to which they would not normally have access. Let visitors be the judges (Local Garden Club, Nursery)
  • Sponsor a "Best Front Garden" or "Best Window Box" competition in your community (Flower Shop or Nursery)
  • Arrange a competition to find the "Best Commercial Premises" (perhaps in various categories: gas stations; shopping centres, etc...). Award a certificate to the winners (Real Estate Company)
