Action Projects to Improve the
Environment
Involving Young People
Getting young people to appreciate and take an interest in
their environment is an investment in the future.
Here are some ideas
to get them involved:
- Identify an interested teacher in each of your schools, or a youth leader. Involve them in developing a
suitable project for their school or organization. You may want to offer PITCH-IN CANADA
materials to assist them.
- Ask young people to identify a local eyesore and suggest how it could be improved.
- Persuade a local school or youth group to organize
a display of environmental posters or essays. Publicize the
activity among your local media and invite dignitaries to attend.

- Work with a school or youth club to prepare a
sheet of questions on littering, recycling and beautification and encourage them to participate in a PITCH-IN CANADA Pollution Count. Ask
them to prepare a report on their findings.

- Offer to give a talk or show a video on the work of your environmental group or on the work of PITCH-IN CANADA
and emphasize the opportunities which exist for young people to get involved with your and
other projects.

- Enlist a school club, class or youth group to
assist at a recycling centre or a charitable
second-hand outlet. Young people are eager to help others, and the environment; they just
need to be given direction and the opportunity.
