Ten PITCH-IN Tips for Anglers
| Don't Litter! | Protect our waters by using garbage receptacles and picking up garbage left behind by others. Set an example for fellow fishermen. |
| Don't discard fishing line in the environment. | Old line can entangle and kill wildlife. Cut used line into small pieces and dispose of properly. |
| Avoid using disposable plastics while fishing. | Since they usually don't degrade, they litter our waters for years and needlessly kill animals through entanglement and ingestion. |
| Don't throw cigarette butts in the water. | Filters don't degrade and are sometimes eaten by birds and fish. |
| Don't destroy "trash" fish. | Each species plays an important role in the ecosystem. Always carefully release unwanted species. |
| Don't destroy habitat. | Stay on designated paths and stay off dunes, sod banks, and other fragile areas. |
| Catch and release. | Preserve future stocks by releasing small fish and fish you cannot immediately use. Use barbless single hooks for fish you plan on releasing. |
| Tag fish. | Help scientists learn more about growth rates and migration routes. Check with Department of Fisheries and Oceans and other regional officials to determine if there is a research project in which you can participate. |
| Join a conservation group. | Stay in the know about fishing and pollution related issues. Contact your local fish and game association, fishing societies, conservation group or contact the Canadian Wildlife Federation for the name of the nearest local member group. |
| Educate others. | Make copies of these 10 Tips for your friends, fishing club, tackle shop, etc... |
