Ten PITCH-IN Tips for Boaters
Avoid using toxic TBT paints. Use the safer anti-fouling paints available at local marines or
boating store.
Keep a garbage receptacle onboard. Make sure it is covered so garbage doesn't blow away and require
everyone on board to dispose of their waste properly. Recycle whatever garbage you can and
encourage local marinas to provide proper containerization for both recyclable and
non-recyclable garbage.
NEVER discard
fishing line overboard.
Avoid plastic
disposables. Items such as plastic bags and six-pack rings are harmful to marine life
and tangle boar props, clog intakes and litter beaches.
Keep your butt on board. Cigarette filters don't break down in the marine environment and are harmful
to sea birds. They are the most frequently found item of debris found on shore.
Don't discharge toilet waste. Use pump-out facilities. Empty
portable toilets at home. NEVER discharge wastes directly in the water.
Avoid using disposable plastic boat covers. Poly covers will last a few seasons and canvass covers even longer.
Buy these - it's $ wise!
Make sure your engine
doesn't leak oil or gas in the water. Do NOT drain engine fluids in the water.
Place a bilge "pillow" in your bilge.
These oil-absorbing sponges are available in marine stores and
remove oil from your bilge water.
Use non-phosphate detergent and scrub brush when cleaning your boat.
