Ten PITCH-IN Tips for Students

READ Keep informed about environmental issues by reading newspapers or magazines.
WRITE Contact politicians, lawmakers, and polluters. Let them know you are watching.
REDUCE Cut down on the amount of trash you produce by using both sides of writing paper.

REUSE Buy products that are reusable such as pens and pencils, sandwich containers, drink containers and canvas lunch bags (or reuse any plastic or paper bag).

RECYCLE Follow your school's recycling rules (or make sure your school starts a recycling program!). Encourage your school to buy recycled paper containing post-consumer waste. Start a compost pile on school grounds.

ELIMINATE RID your school of toxics. Encourage your school to use chemicals to control pests only as a last resort. Check to see which cleaning products are used in your school. Are there more environmentally friendly, non-toxic, alternatives? Talk to your schoolboard to see what changes you can make to ensure they become Green Shoppers.

GET INVOLVED Join your school's environment club or start one. Join and support environmental or conservation groups outside of school.
CONSERVE Save energy - walk, ride your bike, carpool or take the bus to school.
ACT locally Organize a PITCH-IN CANADA Week clean-up of your school grounds, plant a garden, conduct a Pollution Count, start a composting program in your classroom.
