Cell phone handsets collected will be refurbished or remanufactured to “as new” condition. They will be sent to emerging countries where the price of a “new” cell phone is unaffordable for most people. The phones are also provided, at no cost, to other Canadians in situations where there is an economic necessity for both safety and communications. Phones and batteries that cannot be reused are recycled to recover metals and plastics.

"Cell phones contain many toxins and are very hazardous to our environment and they should not end up in landfills," says (name of Organization Spokesperson), adding "we are very excited about this opportunity to promote re-use and recycling."

All cell phones, regardless of age or condition, will be accepted.  "Please make certain to deactivate your phone before giving it to our program," comments (spokesperson's last name only).

According to PITCH-IN CANADA the aim is to reuse and recycle as many of the millions of old cell phone handsets which are tucked away at the back of drawers throughout the country.
"We are pleased to support the development of secondary industries which are involved in recycling," observes Alice Johnson, National Volunteer Chair, PITCH-IN CANADA. "This is a 'win-win' program for the environment, for the groups collecting cellphones, PITCH-IN CANADA and the re-manufacturer, PhoneBack, Canada, who is our partner in this program."
