How can You Help Clean Up Canada?

Most Canadians love our country's beauty and
want to protect our urban, rural and wilderness areas and our waterways and oceans from
pollution and debris. Why?
- It spoils the beauty of our surroundings.
- It pollutes our land and waterways.
- It threatens our wildlife
and is often dangerous to us as
well.
- It says that some people don't care about their neighbourhood, their community, their environment - their world.
You, or your group, can show your concern
for our world. You can show that you do care about the world's environmental problems by
starting at home, in our neighbourhoods, our communities, our wilderness areas.
- Reject products with excessive packaging and choose environmentally sound alternatives.
- Purchase products which are, or whose packaging
is, recyclable and/or reusable and/or made from post-consumer waste.
- Recycle your waste whenever possible - take it to your recycling depot or use your curbside
collection program.
- Encourage retailers, manufacturers and fast-food
outlets to use environmentally sound packaging.
- Buy in bulk
when available.
- Start a composting program at home, at school, or where you work.
- Support the development of comprehensive waste
management and recycling programs and indicate your
willingness to participate in them by writing to your local newspaper and provincial
government officials.
- Don't litter . . . Anywhere.
- Organize,
or participate in, environmental improvement campaigns in your school, neighbourhood or
community. PITCH-IN!
- Reuse when
possible, at home and/or through your community's thrift/consignment shops, charity garage
sales, collection depots, etc...

PITCH-IN CANADA, a national non-profit
organization, was founded in 1967 by a handful of Canadians who decided that personal
action and commitment is required to conserve and enhance our environment.
Today, PITCH-IN CANADA involves millions of
volunteers in various environmental action programs ranging from initiating recycling and
composting to cleaning up and beautifying waterways, wilderness and urban areas.
You or your group can support this national
effort by getting involved in, or organizing, a PITCH-IN Project where you live and by
becoming a financial supporter of PITCH-IN CANADA (see below).
Get into the
action!
There is a lot you can do. Don't underestimate the
contribution that you or your group can make.
- Ask your local government to get involved.
- Tell them about the PITCH-IN CANADA program and direct them
to our Web Site for more information about the Civic Pride Program
for local governments.

Encourage the use of the PITCH-IN symbol on
all litter receptacles (if your community is too small and cannot afford the decals -
consider donating them!)
- Talk to organizations to which you belong and encourage them
to participate.
- Together
organize a clean-up, support a
recycling program or launch a publicity campaign in your local mall, schools,
community or sports centre.
We can offer you some tools to help you. Our PITCH-IN Store and our Resource Centre offers
educational materials, badges, stickers, posters, videos and much more. All are designed
to help you with your campaign.
